One-off&#039;s are for the old days of offset or office printing. True Digital printing gives you endless possibilities when it comes to personalizing a document (letter, postcard, etc.). A digital file (ms word, InDesign...) is merged with a data file. That data file could contain names, addresses, personal interests...). The variable data specialists at any good print company can program letter to be as personal as your list can dictate subbing full text and paragraphs depending if the recipient is male, female, or just purchased a toaster oven. 

Like you mentioned you cant get any more personal than a handwritten note. Marketers know this. I have even seen letter campaigns use fonts disguised as handwriting used in copy - some receiving increased response rates.

The one pitfall of cusotmizing letters, especially based on interested and not just name is that it seems that everything would have to be printed as a one off right? or is that not the case.
