As printers, designers, and marketers are making the efforts to go green you will no doubt-ably hear the question “is this FSC certified?”
What is FSC Certified? FSC stands for Forest Stewardship Council. Certification comes from appliance to standards set by the council.

“Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is a non-profit organization devoted to encouraging the responsible management of the world’s forests. FSC sets high standards that ensure forestry is practiced in an environmentally responsible, socially beneficial, and economically viable way.
Landowners and companies that sell timber or forest products seek certification as a way to verify to consumers that they have practiced forestry consistent with FSC standards. Independent, certification organizations are accredited by FSC to carry out assessments of forest management to determine if standards have been met. These certifiers also verify that companies claiming to sell FSC certified products have tracked their supply back to FSC certified sources. This chain of custody certification assures that consumers can trust the FSC label.”
What does FSC Certification have to do with desgin & printing? Paper products that adhere to the strict rules of the FSC are labeled with the Certification. Many print buyers and designers are asking printers to use FSC certified products in order to do their part in the sustainability of the graphic arts industry. Looking for a few tips to incorporate in your print marketing design to further your efforts in going green? Here is a list of ideas to use when designing and creating a new print product or campaign.
- Utilize the color of the paper and limit ink coverage
- Use soy inks, limit metallic or fluorescent inks
- Use lighter paper stocks
- Use recycled or FSC certified paper
- When mailing, use most current list as not to produce waste
- Target recipients rather than mass produce or mass mail
- Adjust size to get the most amount of prints off one press sheet
- Encourage your print be recycled by adding text and logo on the sheet
- Print directly on packaging or surface rather than labels
